OLD Kai’s grandmother always loved to use the old adage, ‘moon a run till day ketch am’ at any and every opportunity. In this case, the apple has not fallen far from the tree as it is now fitting for Old Kai to use it in the context of the recent exposure of United States Ambassador to Guyana, Mr. Brent Hardt by the man popularly referred to as the ‘doctor’ or ‘de lunch man’.Clearly, the US Ambassador’s credibility has been shattered by the recent revelations of Dr. Roger Luncheon in a letter to the press. Ambassador Hardt has publicly contended all along that the Government of Guyana was consulted from the inception of the ‘Governance project’. However, we are yet to see him respond to Dr. Luncheon’s statement that, “The project was conceived by the American authorities. The project was funded by US Congress. A bid was tendered, the US organisation, International Republican Institute, won that bid and was awarded the contract to implement the project. It was subsequent to those actions by the American authorities that the US Ambassador approached the Government of Guyana.”
This revelation confirms that there is something sinister about this US funded project and justifies Cabinet’s rejection. The fact that the US Ambassador has also refused to divulge certain details regarding the project to the media simply confirms the obvious.
How can deliberately misleading a host nation, casting aspersions on that nation’s top officials which are later contradicted or disproved, publicly announcing that you will ignore the decision of the legitimate authority in your host nation and rather move ahead with your sinister mission and refusing to divulge critical information be tied to ‘improving Governance’ in a country? Rather than improving democracy isn’t this more like encouraging anarchy? Well clearly this is the US Ambassador and some of his colleague’s brand of Democracy for nations which they wish to impose their ‘imperialist will’ on. They have done it before in Guyana and it appears the Ambassador thinks they can do it again.
He can never be more wrong as the Guyanese people are in no mood to relive the destruction of their country all over again.
Old Kai is also heartened that the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) has joined the growing list of Opposition against the ‘US Governance project’ for Guyana.
Their statement also makes a telling revelation regarding the grouping which was awarded the contract to execute the project, “The PYO also recognised that the American organisation, International Republican Institute (IRI)….has a reputation to interfere in the internal politics of a country. They have been implicated in the overthrow of (the democratically elected) Aristide in Haiti. Have supported the 2009 coup in Honduras (against a democratically elected President), and have created political coalitions’ in Poland, etc. These activities have been in direct violation of the principles of self-governance and self-determination.”
The PYO also noted that “The use of such an organisation and the public stance of the Ambassador can only lead to the conclusion that there is an active attempt by the Ambassador to usurp democracy in Guyana.”
Against this backdrop, there is only one option for the US Ambassador and that is to offer this nation a sincere apology after withdrawing the project in its entirety. It may be too much for him to provide all the sinister details of the project and the extent to which the Opposition in Guyana is willing to go in undermining our democracy and economic progress to suit their political agenda.
