The following is the full text of a statement from the PSC:
“The Private Sector Commission (PSC) unequivocally condemns the reported calls for violence, including statements invoking the burning of ExxonMobil’s premises and threats against members of the Guyana Police Force.
“There can be no justification for such statements. No political grievance, disagreement with a court ruling or dissatisfaction with the administration of justice gives anyone the right to threaten lives, incite destruction, intimidate law enforcement officers or place innocent citizens in danger.
“Such conduct is reckless and poses a serious threat to the peace and stability of our nation.
No worker should have to fear going to work. No business owner should have to watch years of sacrifice and investment destroyed because someone wishes to make a political point. The safety of our citizens, the security of businesses and the livelihoods of thousands of Guyanese must never become casualties of political confrontation.
“Private businesses do not determine bail decisions or direct criminal proceedings. Targeting their employees, facilities or operations is therefore wholly indefensible. Every business, from the smallest market stall to the largest investor, has the right to operate without fear of threats, intimidation or destruction.
“Those who encourage violence must recognise the seriousness of their words and the consequences they can unleash. Threats of destruction must never be dismissed as mere political statements. Fires can kill,
families can lose their livelihoods, and the consequences of violence can extend far beyond those directly targeted. Businesses can be rebuilt; lives cannot be replaced.
“The PSC firmly upholds the right of every Guyanese to peaceful protest, freedom of expression and due process. However, these rights cannot be used to excuse threats, violence or the destruction of property.
We call on all political parties, elected representatives and influential public voices to unequivocally condemn these statements and use their influence to discourage violence.
“There must be no ambiguity or selective condemnation. Leadership demands a clear and consistent stand against violence, regardless of
its source.
“We further urge the Guyana Police Force to investigate credible threats promptly, protect those at risk and ensure that anyone found to have committed an offence is held accountable in accordance with the law.
“Guyana’s peace, stability and economic progress must never be held hostage by threats and intimidation.
“The PSC will not remain silent in the face of attempts to endanger lives, destroy livelihoods or undermine our country’s stability.
We stand firmly for the rule of law, the protection of every citizen and the right of businesses to operate in a safe and peaceful environment.”
