UK Foreign Secretary tours US$65.5M CJIA Terminal 2 construction site

— New 180,000-square-foot facility designed to accommodate up to 3,200 passengers per hour

United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon Ed Miliband, on Thursday toured the construction site of the US$65.5 million Terminal 2 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), as Guyana and the UK continue to strengthen their bilateral trade and investment partnership.
Miliband was accompanied by Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Hon. Deodat Indar, MP, and Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, who were briefed on the ongoing development of the modern airport facility.
The project, being executed by UK-based Mowlem International Limited, formerly BHM Construction International, forms part of the government’s wider efforts to modernise Guyana’s aviation infrastructure in response to increasing passenger traffic and growing international interest in the country.
Upon completion, the 180,000-square-foot terminal will be capable of scaling up to accommodate 3,200 passengers per hour, significantly expanding the airport’s capacity while improving the overall passenger experience.

In a Facebook post following the visit, Minister Indar said the development “represents a significant investment in Guyana’s aviation infrastructure and reflects the growing commercial partnership between Guyana and the United Kingdom.”
Dr Singh, in a separate Facebook post, highlighted the importance of the investment to the country’s economic transformation, noting that the project “will significantly enhance Guyana’s tourism, trade, and investment landscape.”

The Finance Minister also pointed to Guyana’s rapid economic expansion, increased international visibility and the government’s continued promotion of the country as a tourism destination as key factors driving the need for additional airport capacity.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali turned the sod for the new terminal in August 2025, positioning the development as part of a broader vision to establish Guyana as a major aviation hub and strengthen its connectivity with international markets.

The investment also advances the government’s commitment, outlined in the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) 2025 Manifesto, to construct a new terminal at CJIA.
Joining the high-level delegation were His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean, Amy Barklam; Chief Executive Officer of UK Export Finance (UKEF), Tim Reid; British High Commissioner to Guyana, H.E. Joseph Fisher; and CJIA Chief Executive Officer, Ramesh Ghir.
The expansion is expected to strengthen Guyana’s position as a regional aviation gateway, supporting increased international travel, commercial activity and long-term economic growth.
