– Finance Minister meets senior officials during IMF-World Bank annual meetings
SENIOR Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, has held discussions with senior World Bank Group officials on expanding cooperation with Guyana and mobilising private-sector investment in key growth sectors, including agribusiness and hospitality.
The engagement took place on the sidelines of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG), currently being held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Singh met with World Bank Vice-President for Latin America and the Caribbean, Susana Cordeiro Guerra, and International Finance Corporation (IFC) Regional Vice-President for Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Alfonso Garcia.
Discussions focused on the longstanding partnership between Guyana and the World Bank, opportunities to broaden cooperation and ways to support the country’s continued economic and social development.
During the meeting, Singh underscored the World Bank’s role as a reliable development partner and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening the relationship.
The discussions also explored opportunities to extend cooperation into new areas, with the aim of supporting Guyana’s development priorities and ensuring that economic growth translates into broader benefits for the population.
Particular attention was given to strengthening private-sector mobilisation through the IFC and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), both members of the World Bank Group.
The discussions examined opportunities to encourage investment in sectors such as agribusiness and hospitality, which have potential to support economic diversification, create employment and expand business opportunities.
The IFC works with the private sector to promote investment and development, while MIGA provides political risk insurance and credit enhancement to help facilitate investment in developing economies.
Greater collaboration with these institutions could help connect businesses with financing and risk-mitigation tools needed to pursue investment opportunities in Guyana.
Guyana’s representative in the office of the Caribbean Executive Director at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Navita Anganu-Ramroop, also participated in the meeting.
The IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings bring together finance ministers, central bank governors, development partners and private-sector representatives to discuss global economic developments, financing priorities and strategies for sustainable growth.
Guyana’s participation provides an opportunity to engage international financial institutions on development priorities and explore partnerships that could support investment across the economy.
