THE Guyana-Colombia Chamber of Commerce is exploring investment and collaboration opportunities in Guyana’s expanding construction, recycling and infrastructural sectors following a meeting with Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill.
The chamber delegation paid a courtesy call on Edghill, during which representatives outlined the areas of interest and technical capabilities of their members, while also examining potential avenues for Colombian companies to participate in Guyana’s ongoing development.
Edghill used the engagement to explain Guyana’s public procurement framework and the procedures international companies must follow to participate in government-funded projects.
The minister said the Government remains open to additional reliable suppliers and contractors entering the local market, noting that a broader pool of vendors could support quality standards and value for money in the execution of public infrastructure.
He stressed, however, that foreign companies seeking opportunities in Guyana must comply fully with the country’s statutory and procurement requirements.
Edghill highlighted the Procurement Act of 2003, which provides the legal framework governing public tenders and is intended to ensure transparency, fairness and accountability in government procurement.
He also cautioned that public works contracts are highly competitive and encouraged the chamber’s members to move beyond preliminary discussions and develop formal proposals that demonstrate how their expertise could meet identified needs in Guyana.
“You are now in Guyana at a good time. We [Government] are finalising the budget for 2027,” Edghill told the delegation.
He encouraged the representatives to follow the budget process closely to identify areas where they could invest and contribute to national development.
“Many delegations visit, but it is critical to move from conversations to formal proposals to determine how your expertise aligns with what Guyana needs,” the minister said.
The meeting ended with both sides agreeing to maintain communication as the chamber’s members assess potential projects, develop proposals and monitor upcoming government tender opportunities.
