A 33-year-old miner is in police custody after a 9mm pistol and 11 matching rounds of live ammunition were allegedly found concealed in a vehicle during a police operation at the Pappy Show Police Station in Region Seven.
The discovery was made at about 16:45 hours on Sunday, October 4, as the vehicle, which had three occupants, was travelling towards Tamakay Landing on the Mazaruni River.
Police said the occupants were asked to exit the vehicle with their personal belongings before ranks conducted searches.
During a search of the vehicle, ranks allegedly found the 9mm pistol and 11 matching live rounds concealed beneath a floor mat in the front passenger area.
Following the discovery, the 33-year-old miner, who resides at Durban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, allegedly fled into nearby bushes.
Ranks pursued the man and subsequently apprehended him.
Police said the suspect is not the holder of a firearm licence.
He was arrested and taken to Enachu Police Station, along with the firearm and ammunition, which were lodged as evidence.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
