A 44-year-old miner has been remanded to prison after being charged on Wednesday with the alleged possession of 36 pounds of cocaine, which police say was concealed inside frozen fish.
Onai Olatunde Nassy, of Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, was not required to plead when he appeared before Magistrate Tamika Clarke at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court. Represented by attorney Bernard DaSilva, Nassy was denied bail and remanded until November 15.
The charge follows an intelligence-led operation conducted on Sunday, September 27, at Richmondville, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
According to Police Headquarters, officers stopped a motor vehicle being driven by Nassy, who was alone at the time. When ranks searched the trunk, they found two bags of frozen fish.
A closer inspection of the fish reportedly revealed several parcels of a white powdery substance, believed to be cocaine, hidden inside. In all, 15 parcels of the suspected drug were recovered.
Nassy was taken into custody and escorted, along with the vehicle and the suspected narcotics, to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters.
