THE sporting spectacle, known simply as the Heritage Games, again delivered a high-octane evening on the final day at the Everest Cricket Club ground on Sunday.
The three-day spectacle concluded with Region Seven and Region One taking the lion’s share of spoils as the interior regions went head-to-head in four major disciplines, namely archery, cricket, volleyball, and football. In the football category, Region 10 emerged as the top side, defeating Region Six 3-1 to clinch top honours.
Region Seven Paruima had a commanding showing against Region One Matarkai, racking up three goals by half-time before going on to finish it off 5-2 to take the women’s title.
In volleyball, Region One defeated Region Seven in the men’s category, and the women from Region One outlasted Region Nine to take a clean sweep of the volleyball categories.
Region Seven also showed their pedigree by defeating Region One by two wickets to clinch the men’s cricket title. Meanwhile on the ladies’ side, Region Seven defeated Region One by eight wickets.
In Archery, Winston Baird scored 238 to capture the senior men’s category, beating out a strong challenge from Triston Hartman, who ended with 221 points for second place. Third place went to Lawrence Baird.
In the junior men’s archery division, Robeno Kanhai registered 151 points to win ahead of Josiah Baird (146) and Stephon Pearson (119), who completed the podium spots.
Zahrah Alli was the top female in the senior class, finishing with 124 to comfortably claim the title, beating off Samantha Defreitas and Yvonne Pearson, who were 2nd and 3rd.
In the junior ladies’ class, Tia Pearson won with 92 points for a strong showing against Marriam Campo (56) and Jayda Jaundoo (41), who took the other top spots.
The awards were presented by Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek, Minister of Public Affairs Kwame McCoy, Minister of Housing Collin Croal, and Minister of Finance Ashni Singh.
Also in attendance were Minister of Labour Keoma Griffith, Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Waldron, and Minister of Education Sonia Parag, showing their support for the event and the nation’s first people.
The family event also saw the cultural heritage of Guyana’s First Peoples in the form of music, food, dance, and novelty games on display.
