THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) celebrated Amerindian Heritage Month with a Heritage Village showcasing Guyana’s Indigenous culture, history, traditions and contributions to national development.
The event brought together staff and visitors for an afternoon of cultural displays, traditional foods, Indigenous arts and crafts, music and dance, while also highlighting developments aimed at improving healthcare access in hinterland communities.
The Heritage Village provided an opportunity for attendees to learn about the diverse traditions of Guyana’s Indigenous peoples, including traditional clothing, food and craft, as well as their contributions to leadership and community development.

An exhibition of Indigenous arts and crafts featured a range of handmade items, while traditional foods provided attendees with an opportunity to experience aspects of Indigenous culinary heritage.
The cultural programme featured traditional dances and songs reflecting the stories and customs of Indigenous communities from across Guyana.
The celebration also highlighted advances in healthcare delivery to remote and hinterland communities, particularly through the use of telemedicine.
Among the developments showcased were 131 telemedicine sites connecting patients in remote communities with medical specialists at the GPHC in Georgetown.
The initiative is helping to bridge geographical barriers to healthcare by enabling patients in hinterland communities to access specialist medical support without having to travel to the capital for every consultation.
