THE Athletics Association of Guyana is stepping up its preparations for the 2027 CARIFTA Games, with a renewed focus on identifying and developing young athletic talent across the country.
The Association will host its Inter-Guyanese Trials on September 27 at the Guyana Defence Force, providing an opportunity for school-aged athletes under the age of 19 from across Guyana to showcase their abilities.
The initiative comes as the AAG moves to expand its talent-identification programme through the establishment of mini training hubs in various parts of the country.
According to the Association, athletes do not have to be members of an athletics club to benefit from the programme. Young athletes can join a training hub in their area, receive structured coaching and begin the process of preparing for national selection and possible representation of Guyana at CARIFTA 2027.
Niall Stanton and Kenisha Headley have been assigned responsibility for overseeing the coaches and coordinating the preparation and development of athletes participating in the various hubs.
The programme is particularly significant during the school term, as it provides athletes with additional opportunities to continue their development while remaining engaged in their academic programmes.
Meanwhile, the Athletics Association of Guyana is also preparing to send an Under-23 team to the South American Games, which are scheduled to take place from October 16 to 19, 2026, in Argentina. The participation of the Under-23 team forms part of the Association’s continued efforts to expose Guyanese athletes to high-level regional competition and provide them with valuable international experience.
The AAG Executive is simultaneously working on preparations for CARIFTA, the Inter-Guyanese Games and other international competitions, while developing its competition calendar for the upcoming athletics season.
The Association’s broader objective is to create a stronger national pathway for young athletes, starting with grassroots development, progressing through the training hubs and trials, and ultimately providing opportunities for athletes to represent Guyana at major international competitions.
With CARIFTA 2027 on the horizon, the AAG is calling on young athletes from across Guyana to take advantage of the opportunities being created and become part of the country’s next generation of track and field talent.
