IN keeping with its commitment to alleviate the financial burdens on students, the PPP/C government has cancelled $175.6 million in loans for 204 students under the University of Guyana (UG) student loan debt write-off programme during the first half of 2026.
This was outlined in the half-year report produced by the Ministry of Finance. The report states that total loans forgiven since the initiative began in 2024 stand at $3.2 billion.
In tandem with the loan write-offs, the University of Guyana expended $7 billion in the first half of the year to expand access to essential disciplines such as medicine and engineering.
Notably, in April 2026, the pre-medicine programme was extended to all regions, benefiting 80 students currently enrolled. Additionally, over 400 new applications for the pre-medicine programme are being processed for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The university has also made strides in engineering education, with 27 students from Regions Two and Six actively pursuing civil and mechanical engineering at its regional centres. (In House Media)
