THE annual National Heritage Games will take place at the Everest Cricket Ground from Thursday September 24 2026.

The four-day event, according to one of the Organisers, Paul Tyrell, will culminate on Sunday with the finals.

Tyrell, who is attached to the event at the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, says they are slowly building toward the exciting Heritage Championship.

He noted that plans are shaping up nicely, adding, “This year we have the popular football, cricket, volleyball, swimming, and archery as well. Archery is indigenous to us; we can’t do heritage games without archery…every year we have the regional executives normally help us with organising regional playoffs, and the winners from there out to Georgetown, we call it the national games. It is very exciting; people look forward to winning their respective region so they can come out here and represent the region.” 

Tyrell says most of the teams have been selected by virtue of winning their games in the region and are eager to head to Georgetown for the national event.

“Most of our regions have already had their playoffs, and the teams are in the preparation stage to come out and give their best this year. Every year we try to give the players more incentive to come out; people generally like to come out and put their best foot forward. They have pride representing their region. This year we have major prizes for the winners, prizes and trophies, and medals for swimming as well.”

He says plenty of talent will be on display on and off the field for all of Georgetown to see.

“People just come out to have fun, and it is a family setting, so you can bring your whole family and enjoy some competitive matches because we have talent in the indigenous villages and in the regions, and you will see good talent as showcased every year.”

He says they will continue to stream the finals of all the major events live on Facebook.

On the sidelines of the games will be the return of the indigenous craft and food, which will be on exhibition.

He said also returning this year is the novelty of games like the Tumu pot eating competition, firewood chopping, and Piwari drinking, among other attractions.
