The pensioners, aged from 55 years, each got four pounds chicken, food items and were treated to snacks and drinks.
The occasion was one when the neatly dressed, well-mannered elderly got the opportunity to mingle with one another and reminisce about their years worked with the utility.
Laughter and smiling faces abounded in the very relaxed atmosphere as a sense of humour was still evidently intact amongst the gathering at the Middle Street, Georgetown office.
Employees Relations and Welfare Administrator, Ms. Arlene Huntley said GPL previously gave cash Christmas bonuses but, in 2007, it introduced the hampers as a way of remembering those who made contributions in past years.
According to her, the beneficiaries receive a monthly pension and a number of them are also getting a food hamper quarterly, as a supplement.
Acting Public Relations Officer, Ms. Shevion Sears announced that GPL will be distributing the hampers on different days, to groups of pensioners.
She said the handing over will be done at Wakenaam, today, for all those to benefit in Essequibo.
Personnel Officer, Welfare, Ms. Yvette Haynes said last Thursday’s event was organised to facilitate a coming together of ex-employees. (Telesha Persaud)
