POLICE are investigating the death of a 23-year-old Cuban construction worker whose body was found beneath two containers at a storage compound in Houston, East Bank Demerara, on Thursday morning.
The dead man has been identified as Alex Jesus Gonzales Beria, a labourer employed by a construction company that was carrying out landfilling works at Muneshwers’ storage compound at Lot W9 Houston Road.
Police said the incident reportedly occurred between 14:36 hrs and 16:00 hrs on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, but was reported to the authorities at about 08:40 hrs on Thursday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a 43-year-old Filipino national, employed as a machine operator at the compound, had used an empty-container handler to position two 40-foot containers on the western side of the compound during the period when the incident is believed to have occurred.
The operator reportedly told investigators that he did not recall seeing anyone in the area where the containers were placed.
At about 08:30 hrs on Thursday, employees reportedly discovered Gonzales Beria beneath the containers and raised an alarm.
The containers were subsequently lifted, revealing the 23-year-old lying motionless in a pool of blood with multiple injuries about his body. A pair of long boots and a yellow safety helmet were found nearby.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned, and a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation subsequently pronounced Gonzales Beria dead.
Ranks from the Crime Scene Unit at the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters processed the scene, while several employees were questioned and are assisting with the investigation.
The body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Police investigations are continuing.
