GUYANA Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has received six 1-megawatt generator sets from Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc. and Guyana Manganese Inc., adding six MW of generation capacity to support electricity supply in Linden and strengthen the national grid.
The donation, which includes the associated power plant accessories, forms part of ongoing efforts to expand generation capacity and improve the reliability and stability of electricity supply as demand continues to grow.
The agreement formalising the donation was signed by GPL Executive Management Committee Head, Kesh Nandlall and Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc. representative, George Zhao.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips; Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar; China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Yang Yang; GPL Director, Gary Hall; Norman McBean; Eric Yu; and other representatives of GPL, Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc. and Guyana Manganese Inc.
The six generator sets are expected to be strategically deployed along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway as part of GPL’s medium-term plan to expand generation capacity in Linden and strengthen the national electricity network.
According to GPL, the additional generation capacity will also assist with voltage regulation along the highway corridor, helping to improve the stability and reliability of electricity supplied to customers in Linden and Region 10.
The donation comes as GPL undertakes several other major investments aimed at strengthening the electricity infrastructure in the region.
Among these is the construction of a 15 MW solar farm in Linden and a new substation at Kuru Kururu. Both projects are intended to bolster electricity supply in Linden and along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
Prime Minister Phillips also noted, during the signing ceremony, that Bosai is constructing a solar farm in Region 10, which is expected to further increase generation capacity in Linden and along the highway corridor by 2028.
The planned renewable energy investments are expected to complement the additional thermal generation capacity while contributing to greater diversification of Guyana’s energy mix.
Together, the initiatives are expected to increase available generation capacity, strengthen grid stability and improve the reliability of electricity supply for customers in Linden, Region 10 and across the national grid.
GPL expressed appreciation to Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Inc. and Guyana Manganese Inc. for the donation and their contribution towards strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure.
