MINISTER of Amerindian Affairs, Sarah Browne‑Shadeek, has announced the government’s official calendar of activities for Amerindian Heritage Month, emphasising its role in promoting Indigenous culture across the length and breadth of Guyana.
The month-long observance, fully funded by the Government of Guyana, provides opportunities for Indigenous people to earn income while sharing their traditions, crafts and cuisine with the wider public.
“The activities observed during this month are highly anticipated, not just here in Georgetown, but in all our regions, villages, and communities. This is a unique month to Guyana, as we are one of the very first countries, if not the only, to designate an entire month for promotion of our forest people culture,” Minister Browne said.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme “Observing Our Cultural Heritage During Our Diamond Jubilee”, in recognition of Guyana’s 60th anniversary of independence.
The programme begins with an Amerindian religious service on 31 August at the Umana Yana, followed by an Amerindian Heritage cultural extravaganza described as the opening ceremony on September 1 at the Heritage Village at Sophia.

From September 2–5, there will be a daily Amerindian arts, craft and cuisine exhibition at the Heritage Village from 10:00 hrs, complemented by cultural nights starting at 19:00 hrs. The calendar also includes the traditional Amerindian fitness walk to the National Park and a much‑anticipated pageant.
Noting strong public interest, Browne‑Shadeek said the release of the schedule will help citizens plan which activities they wish to attend, adding that the ministry looks forward to welcoming all Guyanese who look forward to celebrating Amerindian Heritage Month.
