McDonald, an employee of Bosai Minerals Group Guyana from Half Mile, Wismar, Linden, was fatally shot on August 19 during an altercation at Prasville, Wismar, Linden.
Police had reported that McDonald was engaged in a conversation with Cumberbatch at about 10:00hrs when an altercation developed between them.
Cumberbatch allegedly retrieved a firearm from a motor car during the confrontation and discharged a single round, striking McDonald on the left side of his chest.
McDonald was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Following the shooting, police ranks intercepted Cumberbatch and escorted him to the Wismar Police Station, where he was detained in connection with the investigation.
A spent 9mm shell was recovered at the scene, but police have not recovered the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.
The two men were reportedly once close friends, but relatives said their relationship had deteriorated over an alleged dispute involving the mother of McDonald’s two children.
According to relatives, tensions escalated after McDonald allegedly accused Cumberbatch of being involved in a relationship with the woman.
The dispute reportedly intensified on the morning of August 19 following a social media post involving Cumberbatch’s son.
The men allegedly first confronted each other at McDonald’s home before leaving separately. They later encountered each other again, where the disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical fight.
Police investigations are continuing.
