EFFORTS to strengthen Linden’s electricity supply have advanced with the arrival of an additional 1.5-megawatt (MW) portable generating set at Bosai’s power house in Linden.
Installation of the unit is currently underway, with technical teams working on the necessary transformer and fuel-line connections. Once those works are completed, the generator is expected to begin supplying electricity by the middle of next week.
The update was provided to Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, by Bosai’s Linden management as the government continues to pursue additional generation to address the electricity shortfall in Region 10.
The latest development follows measures announced by Minister Indar earlier this week to boost available generation in Linden, where electricity demand has climbed to approximately 15.1MW, exceeding the roughly 14MW available to serve the community.
Minister Indar had disclosed that the government was working with Bosai and other stakeholders to secure additional generation capacity as an immediate response to the increased demand.
He had explained that the Hinterland Electrification Company Inc. (HECI) and Bosai agreed to facilitate an additional 3MW of generation at the Bosai facility. The government has also been engaging mining companies with available generating sets that could be deployed to Linden.
As part of those efforts, Indar disclosed that arrangements were being made to transport three 1MW generating sets from a manganese company in Port Kaituma to Linden.
“So, we have been talking to the mining community,” Indar said, explaining that the government had approached several companies with available generating capacity as it sought immediate solutions to Linden’s electricity needs.
The additional 1.5MW portable unit now at Bosai represents another step in increasing the amount of electricity available to the Region 10 system, while the wider interventions are being advanced.
The increased demand has been particularly evident during Linden’s two daily peak periods, between 13:00hrs and 15:00hrs and again between 19:00hrs and 21:00hrs. The government has consequently been working with large consumers, including sawmill operators, to shift some operations outside of peak periods to ease pressure on the system.
Once commissioned, the new 1.5MW unit is expected to provide additional generation to help narrow the existing supply gap and improve electricity availability for residents and businesses in Linden.
