HEALTH Minister Dr Frank Anthony recently toured the construction site of the new West Demerara Hospital, reporting that work is progressing steadily on the G$11.4 billion (US$54 million) facility.
According to information from the Ministry of Health, rising in Vreed-en-Hoop on the West Coast of Demerara, the more than 150-bed hospital will replace the current West Demerara Regional Hospital, which has served the region for nearly 80 years.
Once completed, it will bring advanced healthcare closer to thousands of residents by expanding emergency, inpatient, diagnostic and specialist services, including a CT scanner, an MRI, and a state-of-the-art Cath Lab for on-site cardiac care.
The Ministry of Health said the hospital is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027, sparing Region Three residents the long trips to Georgetown that many currently face for specialised treatment.
The project forms part of a wider push to modernise healthcare across Guyana, which has already brought several new regional hospitals on stream, delivering thousands of outpatient visits, lab tests and X-rays to communities nationwide.
