AMBASSADOR Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the country’s candidate for UN Secretary-General, met, on Wednesday, with Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, to discuss her candidacy for the UN’s top post.
Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett shared her vision for a more agile, efficient, and effective United Nations, and welcomed the opportunity to hear Latvia’s own views and priorities on UN reform.
The meeting is the latest in a series of engagements Rodrigues-Birkett has held with Member States since President Irfaan Ali formally nominated her in June to succeed Secretary-General António Guterres, whose second term ends on December 31, 2026. If selected, she would become the first woman to lead the UN in its 80-year history.
The conversation carries added weight given Latvia’s current seat on the UN Security Council, the body responsible for recommending a candidate to the General Assembly for appointment.
Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett said she looks forward to continuing her engagement with Latvia, and with all other Member States, as they work together to build a stronger United Nations for present and future generations.
