GUYANA Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has assured that no jobs will be lost as a result of its acquisition of Skeldon Energy Inc. (SEI), with the power company moving to integrate the facility’s 49 employees into its wider operations and provide opportunities for training and professional development.
The assurance was given during a recent visit by a GPL delegation to the Skeldon Energy facility and power plant, following Cabinet’s approval of GPL’s acquisition of the 55.5 per cent shareholding in SEI previously owned by the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).
GPL already held a 44.5 per cent stake in SEI, making it the company’s sole owner following the acquisition.
The takeover forms part of the Government of Guyana’s broader efforts to consolidate operations and achieve greater cost efficiencies within the energy sector.
The GPL delegation was led by the Team Leader of GPL’s Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall, and included Director Gary Hall and Berbice Zone Manager, Ravindra Jagnanan.
During the visit, the delegation toured the Skeldon facility and power plant and met with employees to discuss the transition and their integration into GPL’s operations.
SEI currently operates a 10-megawatt generating engine that supplies electricity to the national grid, contributing to GPL’s overall generation capacity and supporting the country’s electricity supply.
Nandlall told employees that the transition would not result in job losses and said the acquisition would instead create opportunities for workers to expand their skills and pursue further professional development within GPL.
As part of the integration process, the 49 employees will be offered training and upskilling opportunities in power generation, transmission and distribution, as well as administrative areas.
The programme is expected to broaden employees’ competencies and enable them to contribute to GPL’s wider operations.
GPL said the integration of Skeldon Energy is being pursued with a focus on ensuring a smooth transition, improving operational efficiencies and strengthening the company’s workforce.
The acquisition also positions the Skeldon facility and its generating capacity within GPL’s broader efforts to enhance the reliability of electricity service across Guyana.
