THE Ministry of Education is set to release the preliminary results of the 2026 Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations today, providing the first indication of how Guyana’s candidates performed in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) examinations.
The results are expected to be announced at a ceremony hosted by the ministry at the Guyana Marriott Hotel, which will also provide an opportunity to recognise the achievements of students and highlight Guyana’s performance in this year’s examinations.
The release comes approximately four months after the May/June 2026 examination cycle commenced on April 13, with thousands of students across Guyana participating in the regional assessments.
According to information previously provided by Ministry of Education officials, 13,032 candidates were registered for the CSEC examinations this year, representing students from public and private secondary schools across the country.
The examination period began with CSEC oral examinations in foreign languages, including Portuguese, French and Spanish. Practical assessments in physical education and sport and music were also among the early examinations.
The 2026 examinations were conducted against the backdrop of continued efforts by the Ministry of Education to improve student performance, particularly in mathematics.
As part of these efforts, the ministry introduced targeted mathematics camps designed to provide additional support to students in specific areas of the subject.
Chief Planning Officer Mischka White-Griffith had explained that the camps were structured around specific topics rather than attempting to cover the entire mathematics syllabus in a single session.
She said this approach allowed students to attend sessions addressing areas in which they required the most assistance, while noting that both students and teachers had responded positively to the targeted format.
The camps were offered free of cost, with schedules made available through the ministry’s platforms to allow parents to identify locations convenient for their children.
White-Griffith had also stressed that the mathematics camps formed part of a broader, long-term strategy to address challenges in mathematics education, rather than being a short-term intervention.
Today’s preliminary results will therefore provide an early assessment of student performance following the implementation of these and other measures aimed at strengthening educational outcomes.
In 2025, some 116 secondary schools participated in the 2025 CSEC examinations. The preliminary results showed that the overall pass rate at the General and Technical proficiencies for Grades One to Three stood at 66.76 per cent, remaining constant with the previous year.
