THE Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Guyana’s national referral hospital, is highlighting the breadth of specialised medical, surgical, diagnostic and supportive services available to patients at a single institution.
The hospital said its wide range of specialised services allows patients referred from across the country to access multidisciplinary care, with healthcare professionals working together to assess, diagnose, treat and manage complex conditions.
Specialised care is provided by professionals with focused expertise in particular areas of medicine. At GPHC, these include emergency medicine, internal medicine, surgical services, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, anaesthesia and intensive care, pathology and medical laboratory services, medical imaging and pharmacy.
Within these areas are numerous sub-specialities and focused fields of care, allowing patients to receive specialised assessment, treatment and ongoing management based on their individual needs.
For many patients, the process begins with a referral from a doctor, another health facility or through the hospital’s Urgent Care Centre, depending on the nature and urgency of the condition.
The patient may then undergo a medical history assessment and examination, followed by laboratory testing, medical imaging and specialist evaluation before a treatment plan is developed.
Depending on the diagnosis and individual circumstances, treatment may include medication, further investigations, monitoring, a medical procedure, surgery or continued specialist care.
GPHC said specialised healthcare is rarely delivered by a single professional, with patient care often involving physicians and specialists, nurses, pharmacists, radiographers, laboratory professionals, anaesthesiologists, allied health professionals, technicians and other support teams.
For instance, a patient may require medical imaging to help identify a condition, laboratory testing to provide additional information, specialist consultation to determine a diagnosis, pharmacy support for medication management and nursing care throughout treatment and recovery.
The hospital said having these services within one institution allows different teams to connect their areas of expertise around the needs of individual patients.
As the country’s national referral hospital, GPHC receives patients from across Guyana who require specialised medical and surgical care. The institution said the concentration of services and sub-specialities enables patients’ journeys from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up to involve multiple teams working collaboratively.
GPHC said its focus remains on delivering safe, quality and patient-centred care, regardless of the complexity or nature of a patient’s condition.
The corporation is also set to highlight the healthcare professionals and teams behind its specialised services, providing insight into the consultations, investigations, diagnoses, procedures, prescriptions and recovery support involved in patient care.
GPHC said the initiative will showcase the specialists, services and behind-the-scenes work that contribute to the delivery of specialised healthcare to patients from across Guyana.
The corporation emphasised that specialised care is not simply about having specialised services, but about bringing different areas of expertise together to meet the needs of the patient.
