DEMERARA Distillers Limited (DDL) has broken ground on a US$10 million redevelopment and expansion project in St. Kitts and Nevis, significantly strengthening the Guyanese company’s manufacturing and distribution footprint across the Eastern Caribbean.
The project, being undertaken through Demerara Distillers (St. Kitts and Nevis) Limited, will see the company’s existing facilities at Bird Rock transformed into a modern, multi-purpose complex with expanded bottling, packaging and state-of-the-art warehousing capacity.
The sod was officially turned on Thursday, August 6, marking another major regional investment by the Guyanese beverage manufacturer, which first established operations in the Federation in 1996.
According to DDL, the expanded operation is expected to become a key distribution hub serving St. Kitts and Nevis and neighbouring Eastern Caribbean markets.

The development will go beyond manufacturing and logistics, with plans for dedicated retail and commercial spaces and an interactive Heritage Centre modelled after the company’s facility at its Diamond, Guyana headquarters.
The new Heritage Centre is expected to showcase the history and cultural legacy of rum in St. Kitts and Nevis through curated tours and immersive experiences catering to residents and international visitors.
Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, welcomed the investment, describing it as a demonstration of confidence in the country’s economy and its ability to attract serious investors.
“Your decision to invest here sends an important message that our federation remains a jurisdiction in which serious investors can establish roots, expand their operations, and build enduring partnerships with our people,” Prime Minister Drew said.
“The ultimate measure of development must always be its impact. Its impact on people,” he added.
DDL Executive Chairman, Komal Samaroo, said the expansion demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to St. Kitts and Nevis and to strengthening economic integration and trade within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
“Demerara Distillers has been an integral part of the business landscape in St. Kitts and Nevis for 31 years,” Samaroo said.
He noted that the investment extends beyond physical infrastructure and is intended to strengthen the company’s people, heritage and regional operations.
“By expanding our bottling, packaging, and distribution capabilities, we are better positioned to supply regional markets while celebrating the shared historical craftsmanship of Caribbean rum through our new Heritage Centre,” Samaroo said.
As part of the project, DDL will also introduce modern laboratory and quality-control infrastructure, administrative offices and energy-efficient building technologies, including renewable-energy solutions where practical.
Construction is expected to generate employment and skills-development opportunities in St. Kitts and Nevis while creating additional commercial opportunities for local contractors and suppliers.
While in St. Kitts, Samaroo and other members of DDL’s executive team also met with the project’s supervising consultancy firm to finalise timelines and key milestones for completion.
The investment forms part of DDL’s continued expansion beyond Guyana and further positions the company to capitalise on regional trade and distribution opportunities while promoting the Caribbean’s internationally recognised rum heritage.
