A BOOK of Condolences will be opened in Georgetown this Sunday to honour Sir Garfield St. Aubrun Sobers, the Barbadian cricketing icon whose death last week has been mourned across the sporting world.
The announcement was made by Captain Gerry Gouveia, Honorary Consul of Barbados to Guyana, who invited members of the public to sign the book and pay tribute to “one of Barbados’ greatest sons and a legendary figure in world cricket.”
The book will be available for signing this Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Roraima Duke Lodge in Kingston, Georgetown.
Captain Gouveia extended a warm invitation to the Barbadian community in Guyana, the diplomatic corps, the sporting fraternity, and members of the general public wishing to reflect on Sir Garfield’s life and legacy.
Widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder in the history of cricket, Sir Garfield died on July 17 at his home in Barbados at age 89, prompting tributes from across the cricketing world and a National Day of Mourning declared by the Barbadian government. He will be honoured with a state funeral in his home country.
The opening of the Book of Condolences in Georgetown reflects the deep and enduring ties between the Caribbean nations and the widespread affection held for Sir Garfield throughout the region.
