MV Barima death toll rises to 57; 19 vessels, two aircraft deployed
Four additional bodies have been recovered from the MV Barima tragedy, bringing the confirmed number of bodies recovered to 57, the Government of Guyana announced on Wednesday afternoon.
In an update issued at 1:00 p.m., the Government said 44 of the victims have been positively identified by relatives, while 18 bodies have already been released to their families for funeral rites and burial.
The expanded operation now involves 19 vessels and two aircraft, supported by local agencies and international partners.
Assets from the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard and the Brazilian Navy have arrived in Guyana’s waters and are en route to join the ongoing search, rescue and recovery efforts.
Technical teams are also conducting detailed assessments of the capsized vessel to determine the safest and most effective method of righting it, which would provide improved access for divers working at the wreck site.
Regional authorities and the Ministry of Health continue to assist bereaved families with the identification and release of victims.
The Government said the multi-agency response remains active as teams continue efforts to account for everyone who was aboard the MV Barima.
