GUYANA will host the 13th International Road Federation (IRF) Caribbean Regional Congress from July 21 to 24, bringing together transport experts, policymakers, engineers and development partners from more than 30 Caribbean countries and territories.
Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, said the congress presents a valuable opportunity to showcase Guyana’s rapid infrastructural transformation and growing international profile.
“We are pleased that experts, leading authorities from around the world, are coming to Guyana, funding agencies, international partners, and some of my colleague ministers. We have delegates coming in from 30 territories in the Caribbean region to participate in this conference, and we in the Ministry of Public Works look forward to hosting them,” the minister stated.
He noted that local engineers, consultants, and academics from the engineering field will also participate. It will create opportunities for knowledge sharing and professional collaboration.
The minister added that the level of international interest reflects Guyana’s rising prominence on the global stage.
“People are excited to come to Guyana to see what is happening. Guyana is being showcased. President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the PPP/C Administration have lifted Guyana’s profile and image in such a fantastic way that people want to come to Guyana,” he said.
Minister Edghill further noted that the IRF Congress is one of several major international conferences being hosted in Guyana this year.
Established in 2012, the IRF Caribbean Regional Congress was created to address the unique transportation challenges facing Caribbean nations. Now in its 13th edition, it has become the region’s premier transport forum, bringing together global expertise and regional experiences to advance sustainable and resilient transport systems.
This year’s congress will focus on practical solutions for improving road safety, climate resilience, sustainable infrastructural development, transport planning, road asset management, public transport systems, innovative pavement technologies, traffic management, and the transition to clean energy and low-carbon mobility.
The programme will feature high-level keynote addresses, technical sessions, networking opportunities and partnership-building engagements involving government agencies, development partners, contractors, engineering consultancies, research institutions and road safety advocates.
Guyana’s selection as host reflects its rapid economic expansion and significant investments in infrastructure, positioning the country as an emerging regional hub for innovation, connectivity and sustainable development. [DPI]
