BUDAPEST, Hungary, J(CMC )– Olympic champion Julien Alfred sent a thunderous message to her rivals Tuesday night, storming to victory in the women’s 100m here at the Gyulai István Memorial with a season-best 10.87 seconds (-0.3 m/s wind).
n their first meeting since Clayton edged Alfred for World Championship silver, the Saint Lucian sprint queen turned the tables decisively.
Clayton, the Jamaican rising star, crossed the line in 10.97 for second place, while compatriot Brianna Lyston rounded out the podium in 11.01.
Multiple Olympic gold medallist Elaine Thompson-Herah, still working her way back to peak form, finished fourth in 11.04 seconds.
Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre was quick to celebrate the achievement, releasing a statement that captured the pride of a nation.
“Congratulations to Julien Alfred on another outstanding victory, winning the women’s 100m at the Gyulai István Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting in Budapest (HUN), in a season’s best 10.87 seconds,” Pierre said.
“Julien continues to inspire our nation through her consistency, determination and pursuit of excellence. Every race is another reminder that Saint Lucian talent can compete with, and triumph over, the very best in the world.”
The Prime Minister added that the government and people of Saint Lucia “celebrate this latest achievement” and wished Alfred “continued success throughout the season.”
