GUYANA and the People’s Republic of China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral co-operation across key sectors, with senior officials from both countries highlighting the longstanding partnership as a catalyst for national development and future growth.
The commitment was underscored during a seminar marking the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, where Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill and Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Yang Yang outlined the progress achieved through decades of co-operation and their shared vision for deeper collaboration.
Addressing the gathering, Edghill said the partnership between Guyana and China has delivered significant benefits in education and human resource development, creating opportunities for Guyanese students and professionals to acquire new knowledge and skills.
He noted that the involvement of Chinese engineering companies in Guyana has also facilitated substantial knowledge transfer to local professionals, strengthening the country’s technical capacity while supporting major infrastructure development.

According to the minister, co-operation between the two countries extends well beyond infrastructure to include agriculture, telecommunications, technology, investment and cultural exchanges.
He said these partnerships have helped build institutional capacity, encourage knowledge sharing and create new opportunities for future generations of Guyanese.
“As Guyana continues to rapidly grow and transform, we look forward to partnerships that are built on mutual respect, shared benefits and opportunities that contribute to national development,” Edghill said.
He added that Guyana’s relationship with China embodies those principles and has continued to strengthen over the years.
Reflecting on Guyana’s rapid economic transformation, Edghill stressed the importance of maintaining relationships with countries that supported Guyana before its recent development trajectory.
“We must remember our old friends who stood with our nation before our transformation. China is one of those friends,” he said.
The minister also disclosed that Chinese support has played an important role in many of the development projects currently underway across the country, noting that Guyana is executing more than 12,000 projects nationwide.
As Guyana commemorates 60 years of Independence and China celebrates the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, Edghill expressed confidence that the longstanding friendship between the two nations would continue to deepen.
He said continued partnership, co-operation and a shared vision would enable Guyana and China to build a future defined by greater prosperity, opportunity and sustainable development.
Chinese Ambassador Yang Yang echoed those sentiments, describing the relationship between the two countries as one grounded in mutual respect and common development goals.
She said the Communist Party of China stands ready to maintain close exchanges with the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration and deepen co-operation in areas of mutual interest.
According to the ambassador, China is prepared to expand collaboration in governance, poverty reduction, development planning, youth training, community development, ethnic affairs and party-building initiatives.
She added that both countries will continue working to translate shared development philosophies into practical outcomes that benefit the people of Guyana and China.
Yang said co-operation is also expected to deepen in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, healthcare, education, the digital economy, talent development and people-to-people exchanges.
The ambassador further noted that, as members of the Global South, Guyana and China have an opportunity to strengthen co-ordination on international issues while advocating for the interests of developing countries.
She said enhanced co-operation in multilateral forums would contribute to promoting a more just and equitable international order while advancing the common interests of both nations.
