Motie returns for three ODI’s in Guyana

AFTER missing the T20s against Sri Lanka, Guyanese left-arm spinner, 31-year-old Gudakesk Motie, who last played for the West Indies on June 6 against Sri Lanka in Jamaica in the ODI series, returns to the West Indies squad for the three Day/Night ODIs at the Providence Stadium from 2:30 pm on Saturday.
Two ODIs are scheduled for June 19 and 21 in Barbados the complete the five-match series against the Black Caps.
Motie, who has 35 wickets from 35 ODIS, joins his countrymen Sherfane Rutherford, Kemo Paul and Shamar Joseph for the matches in Guyana.
Paul, who was recently added to the West Indies Test squad as reinforcement, replaces Shamar Springer who withdrew due to the death of his mother.
According to Cricket West Indies (CWI) Shimron Hetmyer was granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to fulfil his Major League Cricket commitments.
West Indies have 11 ODIs before the automatic qualification for 2027 ICC World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia expires.
West Indies, ranked 10 in the ODI format, plays five ODIs against New Zealand, three in India from September 27 to October and three more in February 2027 and they to win at least nine of the those ODIs since, along with three host Nations and the top eight will gain automatic Qualification.
The adverse weather in Guyana could be a factor in the three ODIs to played here on Saturday, next Monday and next Thursday.
The 19-year-old Jamaican leg spinner Vitel Lawes, who has been training with the Senior team since the camp prior to the start of the home series, receives his maiden senior call-up.
CWI informed that Coach Nikita Miller has been added to the team management unit for the Guyana leg of the series to continue providing specialist support to Lawes during his first senior international assignment.
Head Coach Daren Sammy says the series remains crucial for the team’s long-term preparations for the ICC 50 over World Cup.

The home team arrived in Guyana at 2:30 pm yesterday while the New Zealand team is already here and were schedule to have a practice session last evening under lights at Providence while West Indies will practice from 6:30 to 9:30 pm tonight.
