FRESHLY harvested Tambaqui from the community of Mashabo attracted eager buyers on Wednesday as the Region Two Farmers’ Market continued at the Anna Regina Car Park, highlighting the growing success of community-based aquaculture and local agriculture.
The fish, sold by the Mashabo Village Council at $800 per pound, proved to be one of the market’s most sought-after items, with many residents rushing to purchase the locally reared freshwater fish.
Sharon Phillips of the Mashabo Village expressed satisfaction with the response from shoppers, noting that sales were encouraging and the village was pleased to participate in the initiative.
“This has been a good opportunity for our community, and we are happy with the support we have received,” she said.
The Tambaqui sale forms part of ongoing efforts by the Region Two Farmers’ Market to connect farmers and producers directly with consumers while showcasing the region’s agricultural diversity.
The initiative is supported by the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture, which has been promoting aquaculture development in Mashabo. Through the programme, residents have been involved in the breeding, harvesting and marketing of Tambaqui, creating sustainable income opportunities while boosting local food production.
Customers welcomed the opportunity to purchase fresh fish directly from the source, with many praising its quality and freshness.
The market also featured a wide range of fresh vegetables, fruits, ground provisions, seasonings, plants and agro-processed products from farmers and vendors across Region Two.
Farmer Ramesh Lall, owner of Home Grown, said the weekly market has become an important outlet for his business.
“The farmers’ market has given my business the opportunity to grow. I have been participating since it started, and the support from customers has been very encouraging,” Lall said.
Regional Executive Officer Deolall Rooplall and Deputy Regional Executive Officer Omesh Sasenarayan were among officials who visited the market and interacted with vendors.
Organised by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in collaboration with the Region Two Agriculture Department, the Farmers’ Market continues to provide an important platform for farmers, fisherfolk and agro-processors to market their products while encouraging residents to support locally produced goods and strengthening economic opportunities throughout the region.
