OPR probes death of murder accused at Leonora Police Station lockups

THE Office of Professional Responsibility has commenced an investigation into the death of Hemat Kumar Mohamed, 44, of De Groot-Enkline, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, who died while in police custody on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

Mohamed, according to police reports, had been detained in connection with the alleged murder of Shavannie Hanoman, 46, also of De Groot-Enkline, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara.

Initial enquiries indicate that between 10:45hrs and 11:24hrs, Mohamed was found hanging from the window grille inside the Leonora Police Station lockups, using an item of clothing.

He was later escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where a doctor on duty pronounced him dead on arrival.

Investigations into the circumstances of his death are ongoing.
