Peel Region hit-and-run death now a murder probe

Peel Regional Police homicide detectives in Canada have charged a man with manslaughter in a hit-and-run they say is now a murder investigation.

According to reports out of Canada, Mohammad Al-Kassem, 25, of Mississauga, appeared in court Thursday afternoon after police linked him to an accident in which they say the victim, Guyanese Ronald Persaud, 28, was hit by a car around 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Burnhamthorpe Road East and Hurtontario Street area in Mississauga.

Persaud was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

Police say Persaud and a suspect were involved in an altercation somewhere near 225 Webb Drive in Mississaugaand they alleged that shortly after the squabble, Persaud was run-down by someone in a vehicle.
The driver reportedly fled the scene of the collision.
