MINISTER of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud, on Tuesday, received a courtesy visit from newly minted academic Dr Winston Assanah, who presented her with a copy of his recently published book inspired by research conducted through a youth intervention programme supported by the ministry.
Dr Assanah, who recently earned his doctorate, previously served as facilitator for the Ministry’s Family Enhancement Services Section (FESS) Male At-Risk Youth Programme.
The initiative focused on engaging young men through targeted interventions aimed at addressing the effects of fatherlessness while promoting positive male mentorship and personal development.
According to the ministry, the programme formed a key component of Dr Assanah’s doctoral research, which ultimately led to the publication of his book. The research examined challenges faced by vulnerable young men and explored strategies for fostering resilience, guidance, and positive social outcomes.
During the meeting, Dr Assanah expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s continued commitment to supporting vulnerable youth and families.
He also acknowledged Minister Persaud’s leadership in advancing programmes designed to strengthen families and improve opportunities for young people.
Minister Persaud congratulated Dr Assanah on both his academic achievement and the publication of his book, commending his dedication to youth development and his efforts to contribute to research and advocacy on behalf of at-risk young men.
She noted the importance of evidence-based interventions in addressing social challenges and highlighted the value of partnerships between researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in developing programmes that positively impact communities.
The FESS Male At-Risk Youth Programme is among several initiatives implemented by the ministry to provide guidance, mentorship, and support services to vulnerable young people, with the aim of fostering stronger families and healthier communities across Guyana.
