A 29-year-old woman is dead and two other persons are injured following a late-night collision on the Sarah Johanna Access Road, East Bank Demerara, which occurred on Sunday at approximately 22:40hrs. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
Dead is Lisa Blackman, 29, of Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, who was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Diamond Regional Hospital after being rescued from the wreckage.
The accident involved motor car PNN 7493, driven by a 42-year-old male of Turkeyen, and motor lorry GAJ 4979, owned by a 25-year-old male of Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara.
Initial police enquiries indicate that the motor car was proceeding north along the western side of the Sarah Johanna Access Road at a reportedly fast rate of speed when the driver allegedly lost control. The vehicle subsequently collided with the left rear portion of the parked motor lorry.
The lorry was reportedly stationary on the western side of the road at the time of the impact.
Following the collision, the driver and two passengers in the motor car sustained injuries.
Public-spirited citizens assisted in removing the front-seat passenger, Ms. Blackman, along with the driver, from the mangled vehicle. They were transported under police escort to the New Diamond Regional Hospital.
Medical personnel on duty pronounced Ms. Blackman dead on arrival.
The driver was later referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further medical treatment due to the severity of his injuries.
A third occupant, a 36-year-old miner of Quamina Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, was reportedly trapped in the vehicle and later extricated by firefighters. He is currently receiving medical attention at the New Diamond Regional Hospital.
The body of the deceased remains at the hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Police said CCTV footage from the surrounding area has been obtained and will be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
A breathalyser test was not conducted on the driver due to the extent of his injuries.
Investigations are continuing.
