GUYANA has taken a major step toward strengthening global health security and advancing its biotechnology sector, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the European Union and Belgium-based Bioparc Charleroi to develop a world-class bio-innovation ecosystem.
Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, on Tuesday, participated in the official signing, describing the agreement as a transformative initiative that will move Guyana beyond traditional healthcare and into the forefront of biotechnology development.
The partnership with European Union and Bioparc Charleroi aims to replicate Belgium’s successful biotech model locally, positioning Guyana as a leading “Bio-Hub” for the Caribbean.
According to the Ministry of Health, the agreement will focus on three key pillars: innovation, resilience, and economic growth. Under the innovation component, Guyana will harness its vast Amazonian biodiversity to support discovery science and research. The resilience aspect will see the development of regional capacity for vaccine and pharmaceutical manufacturing, enhancing preparedness for future pandemics.
Additionally, the initiative is expected to stimulate economic growth by fostering a high-tech environment conducive to startups, research institutions, and the creation of skilled employment opportunities.
Dr Anthony emphasised that the agreement represents a forward-looking approach to national development, noting that it goes beyond routine healthcare delivery.
“This is about breaking the mould and embracing the future of biotechnology,” he said, adding that the collaboration will not only benefit Guyanese citizens but also strengthen health and scientific capacity across the wider Caribbean.
The MoU signals a deepening of international co-operation in health and science, as Guyana continues to expand its role in regional and global public health innovation.
