A NEW update to the government’s cash grant system is set to impact thousands of Guyanese, as Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Ashni Singh, announced that the New Building Society (NBS) has officially integrated into the online cash grant portal.
The announcement, made via social media, confirmed that persons who hold accounts with NBS can now use their banking information to complete the registration process for the Government’s ongoing cash grant initiative. This move is expected to simplify access for many citizens who previously faced limitations when attempting to register through the system.
According to the public notice issued by NBS, customers are now required to input either their 10-digit savings account number or mortgage account number when signing up on the government’s cash grant website. This addition expands the list of financial institutions already connected to the platform, allowing for smoother verification and processing of payments.
Importantly, the decision to include NBS also comes against the backdrop of challenges faced by sections of the population in navigating the existing banking system tied to the cash grant rollout. In recent days, some applicants reported difficulties linking accounts, delays in verification and uncertainty about which financial institutions were supported. Others, particularly those who rely heavily on NBS for savings and mortgage services, found themselves temporarily excluded from the process.
The integration of NBS is, however, being sought as a direct response to those concerns, ensuring that a broader cross-section of citizens is accommodated. By recognising how many Guyanese manage their finances, authorities appear to be making the system more inclusive and practical.
For those who do not yet have an account, opening one with the NBS may also be a relatively straightforward option compared to traditional commercial banking processes. While requirements can vary slightly, the general steps include: Visiting the nearest NBS branch; Presenting valid identification (such as a national ID or passport); Providing proof of address; Completing an account application form; and making a minimum deposit to activate the account.
For many, this process is viewed as simpler and more accessible, particularly for first-time account holders or individuals who may have faced barriers with other financial institutions.
The government of Guyana has maintained that the cash grant initiative is designed to provide timely financial support to households and improvements to the registration systems are key to achieving that goal. With NBS now on board, access is expected to widen, especially for low to middle-income earners.
