A FORMER participant of the Student Work and Internship for Tourism (SWIFT) programme, Jared Grant, has successfully transitioned into full-time employment in the hospitality sector, securing a position with Scotty’s Smokehouse following his internship experience.
Grant’s achievement was highlighted during the recent Flame & Flavour event, where he appeared as part of the Scotty’s Smokehouse team, marking a significant milestone in his journey from trainee to professional.
Grant first joined the SWIFT programme in 2024 as part of its inaugural cohort, entering with a clear ambition of becoming a chef.
During that year, he was placed at the Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel for a two-week internship, where he worked as a kitchen assistant.

According to programme organisers, he quickly distinguished himself through a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and eagerness to learn.
Building on that foundation, Grant rejoined the programme in 2025 and was placed at Scotty’s Smokehouse.
His performance during the placement ultimately led to him being absorbed into the team in a permanent capacity.
The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), which oversees the SWIFT initiative, described Grant’s journey as a clear example of the programme’s impact, noting that it is designed to provide young people with practical, hands-on experience in the tourism and hospitality industry.
SWIFT aims to equip students with the skills, confidence, and industry connections needed to access long-term employment opportunities, while also supporting workforce development within Guyana’s growing tourism sector.
Grant’s progression from student intern to employed chef underscores the programme’s broader objective of transforming training opportunities into tangible career paths.
