GUYANA’S Backyard Café has made it onto the TIME’s 2026 list of the world’s greatest places to visit. TIME made this disclosure on Thursday, when it revealed the list, which highlighted 100 extraordinary destinations to visit and stay.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, to compile this list, TIME solicited nominations of places, including hotels, cruises, restaurants, attractions, museums, parks and more, from its international network of correspondents and contributors, as well as through an application process for those offering new and exciting experiences.
The Backyard Café is owned by Guyanese chef, Delven Adams, who returned to Guyana some years ago to pursue a project aimed at preserving the Guyanese culture.
In 2016, this newspaper featured the café. It was disclosed that the conceptualisation of the authentic Guyanese experience came during a visit to Suriname. Adams was invited to an “evening of soup” during his visit to the Dutch-speaking nation. Meals were served in the front-yard of the venue, and Adams’ thought and question to himself was, “why not the backyard?”.
The twelve line TIME article was written by Mark Johanson, who described the Backyard Café as a humble, speakeasy-styled spot. The short write-up not only places Guyana on the map, but also the unique café that has garnered support, love, and admiration from locals and foreigners, who visit for a taste of Guyana.
In an Instagram post, Backyard Café said, “From a humble backyard in Georgetown to the global stage. This moment means a lot. A huge thank you to the Guyana Tourism Authority and everyone involved in making this possible. Proud to be part of showcasing Guyana’s rich culture and cuisine to the world.”
