DEFENSE attorneys representing businessman Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, have argued in court that the extradition proceedings is a result of their outspoken support for Palestinians.

Attorney Siand Dhurjon, appearing on behalf of the Mohameds, told the court that actions taken by U.S. authorities were motivated by his clients’ political views and public demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine. This argument is contrary to his clients’ persistent claims of political persecution by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government.

“Their political expressions, which have led to their extradition proceedings, are well known. The Mohameds have organised parades and other activities in support of the Palestinian side of the conflict,” Dhurjon said while addressing the court.

His argument came as he pressed for the disclosure of contracts between Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and American lobbying firms engaged by the government.

The claims represent a departure from earlier arguments advanced by the Mohameds and their legal team. Previously, they alleged that the PPP/C administration had conspired with two successive U.S. administrations to persecute them.

The new contention instead focuses on the claim that their visible advocacy for Palestinians — including public rallies and demonstrations — may have prompted retaliatory actions from U.S. authorities. No evidence was presented in court to support either claim.

The Mohameds’ ongoing legal troubles arise from indictments filed in the United States, where both men are accused of participating in a large-scale gold smuggling operation and related financial offences, including tax and customs evasion. Based on those charges, American authorities have sought their extradition to face trial in the U.S.
