THE Caribbean Poultry Association (CPA) has highlighted a major sustainability initiative undertaken by its member, Edun Poultry Farms Inc in Guyana, with the installation of the Optisec Poultry Manure Drying System at its commercial layer farm located at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara, which produces 50,000 table eggs per day.
Launched in May 2023 and finalised in January 2026, this US$650,000 project marks an important step forward in both state-of-the-art waste management and sustainable poultry farming, according to a press release from the CPA.
This system was established to handle wet manure efficiently and affordably, aiming to produce a valuable resource that enhances crop production. The Optisec system utilises air extracted from the tunnel-ventilated poultry houses and the natural heat generated by the birds to efficiently dry poultry droppings.
This process significantly reduces moisture levels from approximately 70–80 percent to 15 percent within two to three days, producing a stable, easy-to-handle product. By reducing moisture content and volume, the system minimises odour emissions and improves the handling, storage, and transportation of manure.
The drying process also helps prevent leaching and contamination of soil and water sources, contributing to improved environmental protection. Remote management of the operation is carried out continuously from a control room, which features a touchscreen panel.
The dried manure is currently being used locally as a fertiliser on corn and soybean fields at Dubulay Ranch and Tacama Gold Inc in Guyana’s Intermediate Savannahs, providing valuable nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, while improving soil structure.
The Caribbean Poultry Association commended Edun Poultry Farms Inc for its commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship within the poultry sector.
This first-of-its-kind investment in the Caribbean highlights the increasing role of modern technology in large-scale poultry production, and demonstrates the commitment of members to building a more sustainable and resilient regional poultry industry.
