FIVE men were detained on Friday after police intercepted a motorcar at Triumph Public Road, East Coast Demerara, following a reported simple larceny at a supermarket along La Bonne Intention (LBI) Public Road.
According to a police release, the incident reportedly occurred around 13:25hrs on February 27, 2026, when two males entered the supermarket and one allegedly removed eight packs of cheese valued at $8,640 and concealed them on his person. The act was reportedly captured on the establishment’s CCTV system.
Police ranks responding to the report intercepted the vehicle with the suspects and other occupants shortly after they attempted to leave the area. The five men were detained and escorted to the Beterverwagting Police Station.
Those in custody include a 48-year-old construction worker of Campbellville, Georgetown, who was the driver; a 35-year-old construction worker of Stevedore Housing Scheme, South Ruimveldt; a 28-year-old of Section ‘C’, Sophia; a 35-year-old gold miner of Princes Street, Lodge; and a 19-year-old stevedore of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
During a search of the vehicle, a cutlass was recovered and has since been lodged as part of the investigation, which is ongoing.
