WORKS are progressing on the dedicated truck-stop and parking facility at Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, a key intervention aimed at improving traffic management, protecting public infrastructure and supporting the country’s expanding construction sector.
Housing Minister, Collin Croal along with Minister within the Ministry, Vanessa Benn, on Thursday met with contractors and inspected ongoing works at the approximately 14-acre site, which is currently undergoing sand-filling and levelling.
They were accompanied by Deputy Director of Central Housing & Planning Authority (CH&PA) Projects Department, Intakab Indarjeet and engineers.
The developing facility will provide a designated space for heavy-duty vehicles, addressing the growing concern of trucks parking along public roadways and within residential corridors as construction activity accelerates nationwide.
Minister Benn underscored the importance of the project, noting that its advancement is critical to safeguarding recent investments in road infrastructure and ensuring safer, more orderly use of the road network.
“The intent is to provide a space […] so that they do not park on the roads, damaging the road shoulders and the edges of the roads where so much investment is being made to improve the road networks for our fellow citizens,” Benn stated.
With Guyana’s construction sector recording 25 per cent growth in the previous year, the demand for organised parking and staging areas for heavy-duty vehicles has intensified. The Golden Grove facility is therefore being positioned as a timely solution to ease congestion, enhance road safety, and prevent deterioration of road shoulders caused by improper parking.
Contractors on site were reminded to maintain required standards and adhere strictly to project timelines to ensure the timely delivery of the facility. Upon completion, the ministry will engage truck owners and operators interested in utilising the space, particularly those without suitable private parking arrangements.
Minister Benn highlighted that the project’s steady progress reflects government’s broader commitment to coordinated development and sustainable infrastructure planning to match the country’s rapid economic expansion.
