DIRECTOR and Co-founder of School of the Nations and Nations University, Dr Brian O’Toole, died on Saturday following a period of illness.
The 71‑year‑old was a patient in a city hospital at the time of his death, his wife Pam O’Toole confirmed.
She told this publication that he was admitted twice to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in recent weeks, adding that medical professionals tried their best.
Noting his decades-long contribution to Guyana’s education landscape, she said her husband also worked with children with disabilities, something he was very passionate about.
Mrs O’ Toole told the Guyana Chronicle that he first came to Guyana in 1977 as part of the Baha’i Faith and fell in love with the country. Here he remained, becoming a well-respected member of the Faith. He later contributed to the establishment of School of the Nations, which was subsequently expanded to include Nations University.
The couple has been living together in Guyana for some 48 years and they have two sons Liam and Cairon and five grandchildren.
Mr O’ Toole, an Arrowhead of Achievement (AA) recipient, will be remembered for his kindness, strong work ethic, service to humanity, sense of humour, and unwavering commitment to his students, religion, family and Guyana.
The enduring legacy of his service, mentorship, and compassion was reflected in the many condolences and tributes posted on social media.
