Gold miner dies in river incident

POLICE in Regional Division #2 are investigating a river incident that occurred on Tuesday, December 23, at Karimap Creek, St Monica, Upper Pomeroon River, Essequibo Coast, which resulted in the death of 59-year-old gold miner, Lennox Smith, also known as “Uncle Becks”.
According to preliminary information released by the Guyan Police Force, Smith of Kabakaburi Mission, Upper Pomeroon River, had been travelling in a boat along the Pomeroon River earlier that afternoon. Sometime later, a report was made that he was missing.
Residents subsequently launched a search and later discovered Smith’s body in the vicinity of Karimap Creek. The body was escorted to the Charity Waterfront, where it was examined by police ranks.
Smith was then transported to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead; his body has since been taken to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police reported that one male is currently in custody and is assisting with the investigation.
