SEVERAL groups from the Scouts Association of Guyana (SAG) took to the streets on Saturday to participate in the annual ‘Clean-Up the World’ environmental campaign under the theme: ‘Our Place…Our Planet…Our Responsibility’.
This year the scouts cleaned the parapets and roadway along Woolford Avenue, between Camp and Albert Streets, Georgetown. Additionally, groups in Berbice and Linden also carried out similar activities in their respective communities.
This is the fifth year that the SAG has participated in this event. It is part of a global movement that aims to inspire and empower communities around the world to clean-up, fix-up and preserve the environment.
On previous occasions the scouts have done coastal clean-ups, tree planting and environmental education with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The association has recently been focusing on cleaning the environment in the immediate vicinity of its headquarters in Woolford Avenue which is in constant need of cleaning due to the many schools located in the area.
‘Clean-Up the World’ is one of the largest global environmental campaigns which mobilizes an estimated 35 million volunteers from 130 countries. ‘Clean-Up the World’ is currently in its 21st year and is held in conjunction with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).
