At the Berbice Assizes… Judge empanels two juries, creates historical precedent

JUSTICE Navindra Singh, yesterday, empanelled two juries at the Berbice Assizes, setting a historical precedent in the ‘Ancient County’.

The occurrence, after a lengthy delay in the commencement of trials at the Berbice criminal sessions, saw the indictment of Andy Adams for the murder of Neezamudeen Khan on July 27, 2007.
That trial will commence on Friday.
At his previous court appearance last August 6, the judge had ordered a probation report on the prisoner’s background, which should reflect events occurring prior to his incarceration six years ago.
The accused had been arrested in July 2007, when he was eighteen years old.
The other case, of the State versus Roy Pestano (Senior) and his son, Raymond Pestano, is, currently, in progress.
During the jury selection, potential jurors were warned to be impartial, as their decision must be solely on the evidence.
Defence Counsel for Adams, Mr. Joel Persid-Edmond identified a selected juror as a former client of his and a prospective selectee made known that he was an uncle of the deceased.
