A 14-YEAR-OLD lad succumbed at the New Amsterdam Hospital a week after ingesting a poisonous liquid at his parents’ home at Lot 832 Glasgow Housing Scheme, Berbice.
Vivek Karran, a former pupil of Overwinning Primary School, New Amsterdam, was seen by his younger sister drinking the deadly substance before collapsing in their backyard on September 1 last.
The sibling alerted her parents and ‘Boyo’, as he is fondly called, was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he died a week later.
His father Sukdeo Karran, an employee attached to Providence Sugar Estate, said that he had rebuked his son, who was earlier instructed to sleep at his aunt’s home but did not do so.
The father of four said that when the boy returned home after being absent for a day, he rebuked him for failing to obey his instruction and the boy became annoyed.
Meanwhile, this newspaper was informed that the father had also ingested a poisonous substance a few years ago, while a sister of the teenager had also failed in a bid to take her life after her parents had disapproved of a relationship. She has since left her parents’ home.
The lad is expected to be buried today.
