Self-help work, Heritage Day celebrations to highlight Amerindian Month in Region 2

Amerindians in the nine communities stretched across Region 2 (Pomeroon-Supenaam) have started off Amerindian Heritage Month celebrations with interfaith services.

According to a release from the Hinterland Affairs Department of the Region 2 Administration, residents of the communities of Bethany, Mashabo, Capoey, Mainstay, St. Denys [Tapakuma], St. Monica, Karawab, Kabakaburi, Wakapoa and Akawani will be involved in self-help work [kayiap] to clean up and brighten their villages.

The release said villagers will also hold individual Heritage Day celebrations where they will be involved in Amerindian dances and other cultural activities. Mini-exhibitions will be set up to showcase craft and other products and agricultural produce at these Heritage Day celebrations.

The Heritage Day celebrations this month will start off at St. Monica on the 20th, at Kabakaburi on 21st, Bethany on 25th, Wakapoa and Akawini on 26th, Karawab on 27th, Capoey, Mainstay and St. Deny’s on the 29th and at Mashabo on the 30th.
Some of the other activities planned during the month are the Youth Forum, Health Talk and Day of Sports. Chairman of Region 2, Mr. Parmanand Persaud, Vice Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo and REO, Mr. Sunil Singh are expected to attend the Heritage Day celebrations and interact with residents.
