A MAN who wounded his Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara neighbour after an argument was yesterday fined $100,000 with the alternative of six months imprisonment.
Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who imposed the penalty on Calvin Barrow, of Lot 57 Back Street, for the unlawful and malicious wounding, after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
The magistrate cited the medical evidence which said Leon Bartrum suffered deep lacerations to his head and one arm on August 8.
She also took into consideration that Bartrum first started the incident by being on Barrow’s premises without his consent.
The magistrate said it was an offence for which a weapon was used with excessive force and that, after a scuffle between the two men, Barrow lashed Bartrum, lifted him up and threw him to the ground.
Police Corporal, Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said the convicted man was in his yard when he saw Bartrum in his tree fixing an illegal wire connection.
Barrow ordered Bartrum to get down from his tree and, later, went into the latter’s premises armed with a bottle.
Following an argument between them, Barrow broke the bottle and stabbed Bartrum, who had to seek medical treatment.
Both men were previously put on station bail on August 28 when the matter was first called in another court and transferred to the Chief Magistrate’s.
Bartrum, who was absent yesterday, is to make his next court appearance on September 20.
